Course Overview
Students develop effective communication skills for use in workplace settings through practical activities and exercises. The course focuses on communication with co-workers, supervisors, and customers. Students learn to organize and express ideas, deliver oral presentations to different audiences, and work with others to make decisions and solve problems. Examines the role each individual plays in the effectiveness of an organization and the importance of communication for individual professional development.

Course Text

No text purchase is required. The course will access all on-line materials for reading or viewing.

Course Policies & Requirements

1.     Frequent, productive and professional communication is required of students in this course. Students should post a total of 5 to 7 postings over a minimum of three days per week.

2.     Students must follow correct standards for all written communication via the discussion board, email, and virtual classroom chats with supervisors, etc.

3.     Plagiarism and unethical interactions are not tolerated.

4.     It is recommended that students submit all written portions of graded assignments to Tutor.com. Post tutor’s feedback with your submission of assignments.

5.     Missed deadlines in business hurt productivity and second chances are seldom available; thus, your instructor/course supervisor does not accept late assignments without arrangements prior to deadlines. Late or missing assignments earn a grade of zero.

6.     Students not posting in the discussion board during three or more weeks of the term will not pass the course. Full participation is required each week and during group presentations.

7.     If you are having personal or academic difficulties in completing an assignment, communicate with your instructor before an absence or due date. I do not offer “make up” assignments or extra credit, but I will offer guidance before the assignment is due.

8.     Students are responsible for reading text assignments and following all information/course schedules posted in the COM 1010 site or discussion board.

9.     In order to complete assignments for this course, students must have a DSL or high-speed Internet connection, smartphone, web cam, microphone, and/or the ability to create, save, and upload videos to Internet sites.

10.   This course requires a willingness to learn various communication technologies and reliably participate in teams and partnerships with classmates. It also requires oral presentations submitted through video to YouTube and linked in the course discussion forums. If you are unable to meet these three basic requirements, please do not take this course online.

11.   Proper use of written English and outlining is required in this course. Please review the Standards of Written English document in the course documents section of the class.

Course Assignments
Due dates are listed in the Modules for each week of the semester.

1. Discussion Board Participation – 10 to 15 pts.
2. Team Introduction Video & Peer Feedback – 15 pts.
3. Informative Interview & Video Presentation, Peer Feedback– 25 pts.
4. Online Persuasive Training Presentation, A one-week, student-led training of classmates in a discussion board, based on individual research – 30 pts.
6. Self-Evaluation - 5 pts.
