Week Three To-Do List

Week Three  To-Do List

Happy Tuesday!   So, this is a pretty work-heavy week, so look at the list below and prioritize your time.  Your ROUGH DRAFT needs to be submitted by Friday night, so make that, and the activities that directly relate to it, your top priorities.  You can leave items 1, 2, and 4 until later in the week if necessary.  There is no discussion this week; your critiques will serve that purpose.   Be sure to give honest, constructive feedback.

1. Watch my Narrative Essay Explanation (short video).

2. Read How to Say Nothing in 500 Words. We will do an activity with this essay next week, but the content may help you with your rough draft.

3.  Complete Exercises 4 & 5 of Comma Splices & Fused Sentences (unless I've personally given you permission to skip them).  Remember: you will find the grammar exercises in the modules at the bottom of the page, below the weekly modules.

4. Read Give Me Five More Minutes Links to an external site..  It's a common desire to write an essay about someone's passing, but it's tough to pull off.  This is an example of one that manages to successfully pull off the concept.

5. Complete the Week 3 assignment:  Response to Ch. 1&2

6. Write your rough draft of your narrative essay. For guidance, see the Narrative Essay Explanation Video on this module

7. Critique three of your classmates' rough drafts, using the rubric Links to an external site. for guidance

Remember that a good narrative essay has:

  • a narrow time frame
  • consistent point of view
  • use of 5 senses & focused description
  • a MOMENT
  • a sense of irony/growth

AVOID:

  • the "memoire"
  • the "cool-thing-that-happened-to-me story"
  • common momentous events (graduation, marriage, births, etc.)
  • the narrative about someone else
