This course provides students with an introduction to manufacturing, including facilitating safe work practices in industrial environments and controlling and improving quality in a manufacturing setting. The course also covers fire safety, pressurized gases, electrical hazards, and safe machine usage. Students will examine Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policy. Upon completion, students will have the opportunity to earn the Safety Certification and the Quality Practices and Measurement Certification through the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC).

Course Description

This course provides students with an introduction to manufacturing, including facilitating safe work practices in industrial environments and controlling and improving quality in a manufacturing setting. Essential Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Describe the careers available in manufacturing.
Compare safe and unsafe manufacturing workplace environments.
Identify and evaluate unsafe conditions and describe and apply strategies for corrective action.
Demonstrate teaming techniques as they apply to a manufacturing environment.
Identify industrial gases and describe safe handling practices.
Identify and describe the functions and responsibilities of agencies that regulate safety in the workplace.
Explain the key elements of a quality system.
Identify the steps involved in building quality into a product.
Explain the importance of data collection and analysis to quality.
Identify the roles of management and production workers regarding quality.
Identify methods of inspecting materials, processes, and final products.
Demonstrate accuracy using precision measuring tools and read basic drawings.
Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerance.

Suggested Progression

This is a self-paced asynchronous course which means that students will be starting and progressing at different rates throughout the term. You should, however, start with Module 1, complete all of Module 1 along with lectures, assignments, and eLearning before moving on to Module 2. You should feel comfortable moving on, regardless of the pace, as long as you complete the course within the semester time frame. If you are starting at the beginning of the term, you could spend one week on each module to successfully complete the course within the term. If you are starting 7 weeks into the course, you could spend one week covering two modules so that you complete the course successfully within the term.

Assignments Overview

Your learning modules will consist of learning resources, demonstrate your learning forums, assignments, and Elearning pre and post-tests through MSSC.

Demonstrate Your Learning forums are a part of every learning module and most are post-first discussions which means that you will post your reply before seeing the replies of others. Discussions will be graded based on the following rubric:
