Read: Brief Outline of Buddhism

The two major divisions of Buddhism are Theravada and Mahayana. Zen (Chan) is a subset of Mahayana.  In this class we will not go into depth into any of the various schools. The schools are extremely complicated, and just exploring two of the schools in one subset of the Mahayana tradition took me an entire semester of graduate school. Obviously, we don't have time for that. Just know that schools exist (schools means different lineages of belief within the major divisions).

Buddhism was founded by the Buddha. The Buddha is not seen as a god.

The core of Buddhism is the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.  Smith goes into these in detail. So does the Dhammapada.   The triple jewel of Buddhism is the Buddha, the dharma, and  the sangha. The sangha is the community of Buddhists.  These are also known as the three refuges.

Buddhism is generally seen as a non-theistic religion with no creator God. It is true that no anthropomorphized God is embeeded in Buddhism. However, it may be more accurate to say that Buddhism is an agnostic religion.  The existence or non existence of God is not a focus.
