BUS-2410: Human Resource Management
Course Description
This course examines the critical issues and the strategic questions that must be considered when managing diverse groups of people in today’s workplace. Topics include: selecting, training, and evaluating personnel; compensation; health and safety; bargaining units; motivation; morale; and human relations.
Essential Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Explain what human resource management is and describe its role and development in organizations.
- Summarize the differences between the personnel function and line operations.
- Discuss the primary personnel practices and apply them to specific situations, including: a) evaluate the personnel needs of an organization; b) determine specifications of a position and write a job description; c) plan a strategy for employee recruitment and selection; d) develop a wage and price scale; e) design a personnel record-keeping system; f) formulate a strategy for performance evaluation and appropriate responses; and g) identify training needs.
- Describe the influence labor unions and the collective bargaining process have on the personnel function.
- Discuss the federal and state regulations that influence the personnel function on such issues as health, safety and equity.
- Analyze and discuss ethical considerations in the personnel function including gender wage disparity and sexual harassment.
- Discuss the ethical considerations inherent in personnel decisions.
- Discuss issues of equity as they relate to personnel management.
- Recognize what constitutes harassment and describe means for resolving harassment issues.

Assignments Overview
Your learning modules will consist of learning resources, demonstrate your learning forums, assignments, and quizzes. You will also be working towards a final Interview project throughout the course. Please review all of the assignment rubrics for details on grading.
