Personal & Professional Effectiveness

 

Course Description

Becoming highly effective, both personally and professionally, requires empathy, resilience, strong communication skills, and a dedication to proactive behaviors. This course explores these skills and illustrates ways to weave them into daily practice.

Essential Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate empathic communication skills including active listening, building consensus, and meeting mutual goals.
  2. Identify and value diverse cultural perspectives.
  3. Demonstrate key characteristics of resilience and proactive behaviors in meeting challenges and finding solutions.
  4. Develop and communicate a personal mission statement based on long-term goals and principles.
  5. Demonstrate audience awareness through the application of diverse communication strategies.

There are no required textbooks for this course. All required readings and resources will be provided in the modules.

  • Module 1: Empathy - Recognizing Others’ Needs & Validating Their Feelings
  • Module 2: Empathy - Incorporating Diverse Perspectives & Listening Actively
  • Module 3: Intercultural Fluency - Showing Curiosity & Challenging Biases
  • Module 4: Resilience - Practicing Self-Awareness by Learning from Experience
  • Module 5: Resilience - Exhibit Flexibility & Framing Problems to be Solution-oriented through appropriate tone and word choice
  • Module 6: Oral Communication and Narrative

Suggested Progression

This is a self-paced asynchronous course which means that students will be starting and progressing at different rates throughout the term. Once you feel like you have a strong handle on the material, and you have completed all of the assignments for the module, you should feel comfortable moving on, regardless of the pace, as long as you complete the course within the term timeframe.

Your final grade will be based on the following assessments:

Assignments Overview

Your learning modules will consist of learning resources, demonstrate your learning forums, module assignments, and badge assessments. 

Demonstrate Your Learning forums are a part of every learning module and most are post-first discussions which means that you will post your reply before seeing the replies of others. Discussions will be graded based on the following rubric:
