Syllabus: BUS-1010: Introduction to Business

 

Course Description

An introduction to the characteristics, organization, and operation of business, including organization and management, production planning and control, marketing, finance, day-to-day operations in the areas of accounting, personnel, research and development, and management information systems. 

Prerequisites: None.

Essential Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  1. Employ a sound business vocabulary.
  2. Describe the characteristics, organization and operations of business, addressing the following topics: ownership, marketing, production, finance, taxation, human resources, team process, and planning.
  3. Explain the basic economic foundations of business including supply and demand, the nature of competition, and describe the basic measures of economic performance.
  4. Discuss the role of information systems and technology in the business environment.
  5. Identify and access standard sources of information about business including the scope and diversity of career opportunities in the business field.
  6. Describe the opportunities and challenges associated with conducting business in a global environment.
  7. Discuss ethical considerations and social responsibility in business decisions.
  8. Discuss employer/employee relationships in the context of equity, diversity and harassment.
  9. Define the nature of marketing, marketing strategy, the marketing mix, promotion and distribution.
  10. Describe the basic elements of reading, interpreting and understanding financial statements.

Follow due dates

This is an asynchronous course which means that students will be online and not in Zoom meetings. If needed Zoom meetings can be scheduled and you may request office hours through Zoom.  Every week (Module) there are:

  • Readings from the textbook and often mini lectures, videos, case studies, articles.
  • Discussion Forum (s) (Demonstrate Your Learning). Answer the prompt with a substantive post of 300 to 350 words. Reply to two classmates' posts with substantive replies 150 words. DF's are due on time and cannot be submitted late.
  • Assignments - follow the prompt and review the rubric for grading information. Assignments are due, but have a one week automatic grace period with a 10 point deduction off the earned grade. After the grace period, the 0 will remain.
  • Papers and final projects- follow the directions and review the rubric. The final project cannot be submitted late.
  • Quizzes are short checks on your comprehension of the material for the week.

Assignments Overview

Demonstrate Your Learning forums are a part of every learning module Answer the prompt with a substantive post of 300 to 350 words. Reply to two classmates' posts with substantive replies 150 words. DF's or DQ's are due on time and cannot be submitted late. Discussions will be graded based on the following rubric:
